Professional Profile

I trained initially in Pharmacy and obtained a BPharm(Hons) degree at the School of Pharmacy University of London, specializing in Pharmacology. Following this I was accepted for training at the Medical College of St Bartholomew’s Hospital. Pre-registration posts were at Barts and the Royal Berkshire, Reading, followed by higher training posts at the Whititngton, Barts and the Royal Free and back to Barts where I obtained Membership of I Royal College of Physicians of London.

Three years in asthma/histamine research as Research Fellow at Barts lead to the research degree of MD and an original discovery – that a very common respiratory bacteria (Haemophilus influenzae) is capable of the production of histamine in large quantities. There followed an appointment as Lecturer a the Royal Brompton Hospital, Senior Fellow in Allergy at St Mary’s Hospital and later Consultant Chest Physician to I North Middlesex Hospital. I was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2005. At the North Middlesex Hospital, I am lead Clinician for Asthma and run I the Asthma service. In an additional role as Lead Clinician for Bronchoscopy and I introduced and set up Endobronchial Ultrasound-Assisted Transbronchial Node Aspiration (EBUS-TBNA).This is an important new technique which allows relatively non-invasive diagnosis of diseases which may involve the mediasinum (central part of the chest) and which have previously been inaccessible except by operative techniques. The use of EBUS-TBNA results in a substantial improvement in our Lung Cancer by providing non-operative diagnosis and staging and it is also very useful in diagnosing a variety of chest disorders such as tuberculosis, sarcoidosis and lymphoma. I have recently set up a new dedicated Persistent Cough Clinic (Jan 2016) based on best-practice nationwide.

I am a regular representative for the Royal College of Physicians of London on Consultant Medical Appointment Committees in Respiratory Medicine, teach medical undergraduates and postgraduates and lectures regularly to General Practitioners. I have been awarded an NHS Clinical Excellence Award by the North Middlesex Hospital University Trust. I am a member of the British Thoracic Society Specialist Advisory Group on Cough.
