Anaesthetists play a central role in the care of most of the patients admitted to The Weymouth Street Hospital. General anaesthesia, epidural and spinal anaesthesia are only undertaken by a Consultant Anaesthetist.
Anaesthetists also pre-assess patients prior to your surgery, manage any medical conditions during your stay, and control pain afterwards. Anaesthetists are qualified doctors.
All Consultant Anaesthetists at Weymouth Street Hospital have undergone over 10 years of further training before being appointed as consultants in the NHS. They all participate in annual appraisals and the recently introduced GMC revalidation. Many are also involved in research and training.
We undertake the following:
- Epidural anaesthesia
- General anaesthesia
- Local anaesthesia
- Pain relief after surgery
- Spinal anaesthesia
Anaesthesia is well regulated. The UK has led the world in developing and introducing comprehensive universal monitoring and our hospital has some of the newest equipment in London. Apart from being cared for by a Consultant Anaesthetist you will also be under the care of a dedicated Operating Department Practitioner who will assist the anaesthetist, and a dedicated recovery nurse to provide 1 to 1 care after your operation.
Finally, please be aware that your anaesthetist is an independent consultant just like your surgeon. He or she will charge separately for their professional services. We recommend you ask for a quotation and compare this with the level of benefit you have purchased if you intend to claim on an insurance policy.
